History of the Church at Pleasant View
The Church of Christ (Rom 16:16) was established on Pentecost as described in Acts Chapter Two.
The Church of Christ at Pleasant View had its beginning in 1905 when Thomas Powell donated land to be used for a school and church. A building was soon erected for this purpose. The Church and school shared a building until a new school building was completed in 1934.
The church met in the house owned by Charles T. Powell from 1935 to 1938 until a new Church building was complete. This building was constructed by Jim St. John for $1.50 per day with help from members of the church and community.
Construction on the present church building began in 1959 and was completed in 1960. Odell Powell preached the first sermon in the new building.
The old church building was purchased by Odell Powell and moved to another location. There, It was used as a storage building. When the old church building burned in 2009 the wood that was in the old church was over 100 years old. Some of the wood in this building was from the original church built in 1905.
The school building was last used as a school in 1955 when the school was consolidated with Woodland. The building was later sold but was reacquired and restored by Pleasant View Church of Christ in September 1989. The building was donated by the children of Bratten and Ann Sparkman Powell. Wrelv Mears, Milton Parker, Bill Gann, and Brian Witty along with other members of the Church helped restore the building to its original look. This building is currently used for classrooms and fellowship meals.
