Where Have All The Heroes Gone?

As I write this article we are mourning the loss of a great president, Ronald Reagan. Regardless of one's political views all America and the world acknowledges that this president was a man worthy of honor and respect. His desire for peace and his leadership in the world community will surely mark him as a hero.

Although President Reagan was eulogized by leaders from around the world, perhaps the most powerful testimony to his influence was the number of young people who stood for hours in long lines to pay respects to this great man for whom they have no personal memory. He was a hero to people of all ages and to nations around the world.

The real heroes of the world are not marked by their ability to stir an audience through profane music or sordid values. They are the people who stand tall with values and life purposes worth emulating. They are the people who touch lives and make them better. Their names may not appear on the headlines of our newspapers. They may not draw big crowds at their funerals.

The real heroes of our day may be mothers who know how to soothe broken hearts and give unselfishly of themselves. They may be Bible class teachers or church leaders, or they may be shut-ins who pray every day for others. Heroes may include young people who have put God first in their lives, or elderly people whose eyes are weary and whose bodies move slowly but whose faith remains strong.

The Bible is filled with heroes of faith. Read Hebrews 11 and find men and women whose lives made a difference ... men like Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David. And women like Rahab who risked her own life to assist God's servants.

We need modem heroes for our youth to look up to as examples of faith and devotion. They need to see in us a clear sense of purpose and destiny. They need to see men and women who stand up with courage. They need to see Jesus living in us.
