A NEEDY
CHURCH
It
seems to me," said a member, "that the church is always needing
something. Every time we meet, there is a new call."
You
are right," replied one of the elders. "The church is always in need.
I had a little boy once who seemed to always need something. One week, shoes,
then shirts, lunch money, bus fare, and spending money. I thought he asked for
too much, and I told him so. But he hasn't asked for anything in years now - he quit needing anything from me. You see, he died. But there have been
times when I had rather hear his voice asking for something just one more time
than to hear any voice in the world.
"Perhaps
you have never missed the church. It has always been there when you needed it,
and you have come to take it for granted. But do you realize how you would feel
if it were taken from you as my boy was? I confess I did not know how much he
meant to me until it was too late."
MORAL: A church not needing
anything is a dead church, and cannot offer a living hope to a dying world. The
church that has no needs fills none. A growing church is a needing church!

THE FIRST GOSPEL MEETING
PRAYER PRECEDED THIS GREAT MEETING. "These all with one
accord continued steadfastly in prayer, with the women, and Mary the mother of
Jesus, and with his brethren." (Acts 1:14.) Someone has well said, "A
prayerless preparation will mean a powerless effort in a gospel meeting."
THOSE WHO CONDUCTED THIS MEETING WERE IN THEIR
PROPER PLACE.
(Luke 24:49). Acts 2:1 informs us: "And when the day of Pentecost was now
come, they were all together in one place." Suppose the apostles had failed
to comply with this direction. What a tragedy that would have been! When the
church conducts a gospel meeting the place of each church member is at each and
every service of that meeting.
THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST WAS FULLY, FREELY AND
FEARLESSLY DECLARED. The first gospel sermon was a model for all gospel sermons in the
years that followed. There was no compromise of the conditions that Jesus had
laid down for man's salvation. Acts 2:38 is in perfect harmony with the divine
ultimatums given in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20; Luke 24:47).
THOSE WHO GLADLY RECEIVED THE WORD WERE
BAPTIZED
(v. 41). Those who claim to gladly receive the word, but who refuse to be
baptized must part company from this first group of converts. When the same
"Jerusalem gospel" is proclaimed we can be sure there will be results
in one way or another.
THOSE CONVERTED IN THIS MEETING CONTINUED
FAITHFUL IN THE SERVICE OF CHRIST (v. 24). Their loyalty demonstrated the
genuineness of their conversion. "And day by day, continuing
steadfastly with one accord in the temple . . . praising God, and having favor
with all the people." (vv, 46-47).
THE CHURCH THUS ESTABLISHED CONTINUED TO GROW
NUMERICALLY AS WELL AS SPIRITUALLY. "And the Lord added to them day by day
those that were saved" (v. 47). Due to their continuous cooperation
with God, He blessed them with an abundant harvest of souls.
