CAN WE KNOW THE TRUTH?
Johnny O. Trail
We live in an age where the truth is treated in a
haphazard manner. We are lied to by so many people. It is sometimes hard to
determine who is telling the truth, when we hear so many contradicting stories.
If this were not bad enough, we have individuals who assert that there is no
such thing as absolute truth. They claim that truth is relative to the person,
or the situation.
Unfortunately, this view of the truth is found in
certain religious beliefs. Many believe that biblical truth is relative - not absolute. As a result, it becomes easier for one to rewrite scripture to
suit their needs, desires, or lifestyles. This low view of scripture seems to
have found its way into some churches of the Lord's people.
What does the Bible say about the truth? Can we know
absolute truth? In this treatise, we will seek to answer both.
The Bible teaches that God's word is truth. John
17:17 "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth." If
we want to know the truth on any matter, all we must do is consult the word of
God. If we have an accurate translation of God's revelation to mankind, we can
safely determine all things that pertain to Godliness, morality, and salvation.
Thus, one can be sanctified through the study of the scriptures. To sanctify
is to set aside as being holy. God's word is able to help our faith and trust
in Him to grow (Romans 10: 17). That is, it helps maintain our unique
relationship with God as his children.
Moreover, the Bible teaches that the truth, or the
word, was given to us by men who had the very words of God's revelation
breathed into them. II Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness." The word inspiration
literally means, "God breathed." In other words, the very words of
the Bible were given to the men who wrote them down. We can study God's word
and know it is His will for our lives.
When one is faced with the question, "Can we
know absolute truth?" the answer must be a resounding yes. To deny the
existence of absolute truth is to undermine the authority of God's holy word.
A philosophy teacher was arguing that there was no
such thing as absolute truth. A student in his class raised his hand and asked,
"Are you absolutely sure?" If there is no such thing as absolute
truth, there would be no way of making a truth claim about any discipline or
field of study.
Furthermore, common sense dictates that there must
be absolute truth. If there is no absolute truth, then all claims of a factual
nature are ridiculous. A person being quizzed about the date of the Declaration
of Independence could give any date and it would have to be correct.
Consequently, God's word is a source of absolute
truth. We can trust His word to lead us into all truth. He has revealed His
will to mankind through His word, the truth. All we must do is examine it to
see what He expects of us in this life.

Often the most useful Christians
are those who serve their Master in little things. He never despises the day of small things, or else He would not
hide His oaks in tiny acorns, or the wealth of a wheat field in bags of little
seeds.
