ATTITUDES ON GAYS
ARE STARTLING!
Charles Cochran
NOTE: The following letter by Charles Cochran was
published by the Chattanooga (TN) Free Press on September 2, 2003. It
illustrates
the power of such letters to the press. Brother Cochran preaches for the East
Ridge Church of Christ in Chattanooga.
There seems to be a subtle move
in the thinking of some religious people today. It is startling to read of
those who feel "good" about the recent recognition and acceptance of
an openly sinful lifestyle in a denominational church.
Forgotten in all the expressions
of gratitude for the "openness" and nonjudgmental attitudes about
this matter is what pleases the Lord. There is no way one may know what pleases
the Lord except what he has revealed on this or any other issue facing our
society.
This revelation comes only
through divinely inspired Scripture. Churches have no authority in themselves
to settle such matters.
Men have chosen the slippery
slope of uncertainty by following what is "right in their own
eyes." God has spoken clearly on the sinfulness of homosexuality
(Romans 1:2432).
Paul wrote: "Who knowing
the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are worthy
of death, not only do the same but also approve those who practice them"
(Romans 1:32).
The righteous judgment of God can
only be understood by those things revealed in sacred Scripture. The death
spoken
of in this passage is that which is caused by the "wages of sin"
(Romans 6:23).
If one's sexual preference does not really matter, what
about open fornication? What about a man having more than one wife? What about
bestiality? What about pedophilia?
The line must be drawn somewhere.
And God has drawn that line clearly in Scripture. Let's do what pleases Him!

DEATH
"Death"
is a term that, in one sense or another, suggests the idea of separation.
(a)
Physical death is that
state of the body which is deprived of the "spirit" or
"soul" (Gen. 25:8; 35:18; Jas. 2:26). Death is a "mystery"
that calls for an explanation. Atheism cannot explain it. If nature has the
power to "create" life (as evolutionary dogma asserts), why can it
not sustain it? The truth is, death is a punishment for man's original
rebellion against his Maker (Rom. 5:12).
(b)
Spiritual death is the
state of being separated from God by virtue of sin (Isa. 59:1-2; Gen. 2:17;
Eph. 2:1, 5; 1 Tim. 5:6).
(c)
Eternal death is the
ultimate condition of being forever banished from the presence of God (Rom.
6:23; Rev. 20:14; cf. Mt. 7:23; 2 Thes. 1:7-9).
