A
NEEDED WARNING TO CHURCHES
MAJORITY
RULE in a congregation is wrong. The church is not a democracy. Things are not
to be settled in church affairs by another vote. Such a procedure is both
unscriptural and without sense. Many scriptural objections may be raised
against majority rule in the church. We mention a few of these:
1)
MAJORITY RULE makes the elders subject to the church. This is just the
opposite of what God has taught along this line. Instead of the elders being in
subjection to the church, the church is told to "obey them that have the
rule of you" (Heb. 13:17). When a godly group of elders are functioning
in their divine capacity and in harmony with the word of God, the church that
does not obey such an eldership is sinning against God.
2)
MAJORITY RULE stirs up political strife in the church. The young and
inexperienced vote on matters they know little or nothing about. They vote in
harmony with the wishes of the side they are on. Majority rule usually results
in a Corinthian affair (I Cor. 1:10-12).
3)
MAJORITY RULE is usually demanded by the unruly and the untaught (I Pet.
5:5).
4)
MAJORITY RULE often encourages preachers to disregard the elders and
cater to the majority in the congregation.
Even
though you may be able to point to some peaceable, majority-rule congregation,
still the system is wholly unscriptural. But the majority of congregations who
try majority rule are torn with strife and dissension.
