CLIMB THE WALLS

"OH, I SURE AM HAPPY TO SEE YOU," THE LITTLE BOY SAID TO HIS GRANDMOTHER ON HIS MOTHER'S SIDE.  "NOW MAYBE DADDY WILL DO THE TRICK HE HAS BEEN PROMISING US."  THE GRANDMOTHER WAS CURIOUS.  "WHAT TRICK IS THAT?" SHE ASKED.   "I HEARD HIM TELL MOMMY THAT HE WOULD CLIMB THE WALLS IF YOU CAME TO VISIT," THE LITTLE BOY ANSWERED.

Mother-in-laws have been the source of many a joke over the years.  Situation comedies on TV especially love to pick on mother-in-laws.  But poking fun at mother-in-laws cannot be found in the Bible.

When Abraham’s servant found a wife for Isaac through the providence of the Lord, and Rebekah’s family agreed to let her go back with the servant to be a wife for Isaac, it is said that “the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.” (Gen. 24:53)  The servant treated Isaac’s future mother-in-law with respect, for it was because of her that Rebekah had been born and that all of the nations of the earth would be blessed.

One of the Ten Commandments given to the children of Israel was to “honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”  (Ex. 20:12).  I think that our in-laws deserve this same honor as well.

Ruth so loved her mother-in-law Naomi that after the death of their husbands, Ruth begged Naomi not to send her away but to let her stay with her.  “And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.” (Ruth 1:16-17)  Ruth so loved and respected Naomi that she wanted to die and be buried in the same place that Naomi would die and be buried.

Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in law.  “And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.  And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.” (Luke 4:38-39)  No doubt Peter was one of those who “besought” Jesus, for he knew that Jesus could heal her with just a touch of His hand. (Mark 1:31)

Jesus has commanded us to “love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”  (John 13:34)  This includes mother-in-laws!

May God bless you!
