JESUS
IS PRESENT EVERY SUNDAY – ARE YOU?
Here
is a joke I thought was cute:
“It
was Palm Sunday and, because of a sore throat five-year-old Johnny
stayed home from church with a sitter.
When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm
branches.
The boy asked what they were for and his family replied,
‘People put them down in the road for Jesus’ colt to walk on.’
‘Wouldn’t you know it,’ the boy fumed.
‘The one Sunday I don’t go, he shows up!’”
Actually,
Jesus is in our midst every Sunday.
We may not be able to physically see Him, but we see Him by
faith. Jesus said in Matt. 18:20, “For where two or three are
gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
Following the institution of the first Lord’s Supper, Jesus
told his disciples, “I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of
the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's
kingdom” (Matt. 26:29).
Since the church is the “kingdom” (Matt. 16:28), when
we now partake of the fruit of the vine on the first day of the week as
a memorial of His shed blood, Jesus is “drinking” or communing with
us.
Since
Jesus is in our midst every first day of the week, shouldn’t we “give
the more earnest heed” (Heb. 2:1) to worship God “in spirit
and in truth” (John 4:24) and to be present for every service, “not
forsaking the assembling of ourselves together”? (Heb. 10:25)
