If
God were as unmerciful to us as we are to each other, heaven wouldn’t
have to be very large to hold all the saved.

PRAYERS
The Sunday school teacher asked, “Now, Johnny,
tell me, do you say prayers before eating?”
“No sir,” he replied, “We don’t have to.
My mom is a good cook!”
I think it is commendable of the little boy to
complement his mother in such a fashion.
Johnny is honoring his mother in so doing.
Paul told the Ephesians in Eph. 6:1-3: “Children, obey your
parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment
with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long
on the earth.”
But, the purpose of prayer before a meal is not to pray
that what you are about to eat will not harm you or make you ill.
But, rather, the purpose is to give thanks to God for blessing
you with the food set before you. Paul
said in Phil. 4:6 – “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing
by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made
known unto God.” We
should be thankful enough to God to thank Him for all of the things He
has blessed us with. And He demands that we ask Him for the things that we stand
in need of, even though He already knows our every need. Jesus, in teaching His disciples the model prayer, told them
to pray that God would “give us this day our daily bread.”
(Matt. 6:11)
Jesus left us an example of giving thanks before a meal
in Matt. 14:19 – “And he commanded the multitude to sit down on
the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up
to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples,
and the disciples to the multitude.”
If Jesus did it, shouldn’t we follow His example?
