What Kind of Pen?

As I read books, I typically read with a highlighter in my hand. Any points I see that are particularly interesting, worth repeating, or especially challenging I will mark over with my highlighter so that I can find them quickly later. A few weeks ago I was reading a book and came to one of these interesting sections. When I started to highlight I quickly discovered that I was not holding a highlighter at all. I was marking through the passage with a black sharpie ink pen. Instead of making the message stand out for emphasis, I was making it into a solid black line. Oops!

As I laughed at myself over this accident, I thought how similar this was to the ways that many people read the Bible, God's book. Good Bible students search the scriptures diligently, allowing the scriptures to change and shape their lives. When they find a particularly powerful or applicable passage of scripture they give time to contemplating its meaning in their life. They give special attention to making their life a greater reflection of what they see on the page. This is how King Josiah treated God's Word. When he saw in the law that they had not been living according to it he instituted change and restoration for the entire  nation. Unfortunately, not everyone reads the Bible with such respect.

Some read the Bible with a black sharpie ink pen in their hand. When they see a passage of scripture that applies powerfully in their life they mark through it. They cover it up and act like it is not there. This is how King Jehoiakim read the scriptures. When they were read in his presence he cut them up with a knife and threw them into the fire (Jeremiah 36:23). I am afraid that there are far to many Jehoiakims today.

May we strive to be more like Josiah than Jehoiakim. May we strive to search the scriptures daily to find God’s word for mankind today (Acts 17:11).
