Thanksgiving Time

Back in the old days Paul J. Getty, one of the richest men in America, was asked "How much more money do you want?" His reply to the question was, "One more dollar!" And then there was the big money and prestige contest that raged between Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan and F.W. Woolworth - if one of them got something or built a building for themselves, the other man had to acquire or build something bigger than the other one.

Recently an interview was conducted between American's two wealthiest men, the one who is just a couple of billion dollars short of the other said his goal in life was: "I have got to catch Bill and have more money than he does. " Where does it all end? When does "Thanksgiving" become something more than good turkey, dressing and lots of good pie?

The church at Philippi was in the midst of a lot of suffering and the Holy Spirit caused the apostle Paul to write to them, "Rejoice in the Lord. Rejoice in Christ Jesus. Rejoice in the Lord always; and again I say, Rejoice." (Philippians 3:1,3; 4:4). Then he followed that with, "with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God" (Philippians 4:6). When Ezekiel, the prophet of God, was communicating the message of God regarding what would happen after Jesus was set up as "the Shepherd and Prince" he said "there will be showers of blessing" (Ezekiel 34:20-26). We are blessed above any nation or people in the entire world as far as material goods are concerned. As God's people, we have spiritual blessings that are indescribably marvelous. That leaves a big question: How grateful, thankful, are you for what is already yours?

The song says, "Count your many blessings, name them one by one." Would you take a piece of paper and write down today all the things you are thankful for, then read the list to God in prayer each of the next several days…adding to it as you go? Then sometime Thanksgiving Day say a special prayer that includes everything you are thankful for.
