Where In The Bible Will I Find:
The Testimony Of The Water And
Blood?
When Jesus was ready to enter upon His public
ministry, He was baptized in water, thus fulfilling all righteousness (Matt. 3:15).
It was at His baptism that the Father identified Him as "...my beloved
Son, in whom I am well pleased" (v. 17).
When Christ died on the cross, His blood was shed "for
the remission of sins," also water came from His side when pierced by
the soldier, thus connecting blood and water. On the evening of His betrayal He
established "The Lord's Supper," making the fruit of the vine
the emblem of His blood, which was to be, and is now being observed in the
church of Christ. Also baptism was ordained by Christ in the divine commission
as one of the conditions upon which pardon, remission of sins, could be
obtained.
Therefore, in the gospel plan of salvation the water
and the blood are so grouped and connected that the benefits of the blood can
only be reached by people submitting to water baptism. On our submission to the
ordinance of water baptism we enter into Christ, "In whom we have
redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches
of his grace" (Eph. 1:7).
John, the apostle of love, tells us, "This
is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but
by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spitit
is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word,
and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear
witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three
agree in one" (I John 5:6-8).
This shows that we have three witnesses on earth to
the truth that Jesus is the anointed Son of God. The Holy Spirit bears
testimony through the Word of truth; the fruit of the vine in the Lord's
Supper, representing the blood of Christ, is also a continual witness to the
same truth; while baptism, representing the burial and resurrection of Christ,
also bears testimony to Him.
These ordinances would not have been in existence
had Christ not been on earth and ordained them. Being connected with the
church, these three continue to witness to the great truth that Jesus is the
Son of God. "He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in
himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth
not the record that God gave of his Son" (I John 5:10).
When we believe the testimony of these witnesses we
have the assurance in ourselves, in our own hearts, that He is the Christ, the
Son of the living God, our Savior, and the chief Corner Stone of the New and
everlasting Covenant. To know God is to love Him, and to love Him is to keep
His commandments (John 14:15). God loved us so much that He gave
His Son for us, and for this, we should also love one another and love Christ
so much that we will give our life in the service to Him.
