Where
In The Bible Will I Find:
That
Everyone Must Understand What The Will Of The Lord Is?
Much of the false doctrine that is taught today comes
from a complete lack of understanding what the will of the Lord is. The
apostle Paul tells us, "Wherefore be ye not unwise, but
understanding what the will of the Lord is" (Eph. 5:17).
Jesus plainly stated to His disciples, “…Every
man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto
me" (John 6:45). Without learning what the will of the Lord is, no
one can come to God through Christ. Every act of obedience taught by Christ
must be believed and obeyed. Baptism is probably the most in all the acts of
obedience taught in the Bible that is misunderstood today.
Most religious people believe in baptism but baptism
without understanding is no baptism at all. Sprinkling a little water on
babies, pouring a little water on the heads of adults, and calling this
baptism, has been responsible for much of the misunderstanding on the
teaching of baptism.
Baptism is an act of obedience on the part of the
believer. No baby has the ability to believe the gospel and request baptism.
If another person decides to baptize you, it is not your volition and
therefore it is not your obedience. To obey the Lord, one must decide for
himself to do the Lord's will. The Lord explains what baptism is for: "He
that believeth and is baptized shall be saved..." (Mark 16:16).
Peter understood the teaching on baptism which he had
learned from the Lord: for when he was asked the question "What
shall we do?" He replied, "…Repent, and be baptized every
one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins…baptism
doth also now save us…" (Acts 2:37-38; 1 Peter 3: 21).
Saul of Tarsus, before his conversion, was a
persecutor of the church. On his way to Damascus to bind and imprison more
Christians, the Lord appeared to him, and when Saul asked the Lord what he
must do the Lord told him to go on into Damascus and there he would be told
what he must do. When Ananias the preacher found him he told Saul to, "…arise,
and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the
Lord" (Acts 22:16).
Saul, who became the apostle Paul, fully understood
what the act of obedience in baptism was: for he taught, "Know ye
not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized
into his death?…For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ
Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on
Christ" (Rom. 6:3; Gal. 3:26-27).
Jesus and his apostles have given an unmistakable
explanation of baptism: It saves by faith through obedience to the Word of
God; its for the remission of sins; its to wash away sins, and its to put on
Christ (the ONLY way one can be IN Christ is to be baptized INTO Christ -
Gal. 3:27). Many people are hindered in being baptized because they do not
realize what the Lord actually taught about it, or just what the will of the
Lord is.
