Where In The Bible Will I
Find:
How God Reveals His Will To
Us Today?
Over
the past several years we have heard much about some one in some area seeing
the face of Jesus being illuminated on some object (who on earth knows what
Jesus looks like?), one claiming to have seen a 900 foot tall Jesus, and others
claiming that the Lord speaks to them directly. Of course, all these are false
and foreign to the teaching of God's Word.
God
plainly says through His written Word, "God, who at various times and
in different ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in
these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all
things, through whom also He made the worlds" (Heb. 1:1-2 NKJV).
During the old Mosaic law (now void), God spoke directly
to the head of families or through the prophets, but in the new (Christian) law
He speaks to us through His Son. Jesus, while on earth, spoke and taught the
Word of God for about three years, selecting the apostles who would deliver His
Word to all mankind, "...Go ye into all the world, and preach the
gospel to every creature, He that believeth and is baptized shall be
saved...For, I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of
God unto salvation to every one that believeth..." (Mark 16:15-16;
Rom. 1:16).
Further,
Jesus assured them that they would speak only what He had delivered to them for
the Holy Spirit Himself would guide them into all truth (John 14:26; 16:13).
The apostles went, spoke and wrote the things spoken to them by the Lord who
assured them that, "He that heareth you heareth me; and he that
despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent
me" (Luke 10:16). Just as the Lord promised, the Holy Spirit came and
guided the apostles in all their speaking (Acts 2:1-4), and all the
writing of the New Testament (II Tim. 3:16-17).
Listen
to Paul, "For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of
man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit
of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which
is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but
which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual"
(I Cor. 2:11-13).
Paul
is saying: (1) Only the Spirit of God knows the things of God. (2) The apostles
were given the Spirit of God to enable them to reveal the things of God, and
(3) The apostles revealed the things of God in "WORDS" given by the
Holy Spirit. And so Paul was able to write, "...ye received the word of
God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is
in truth, the word of God..." (I Thess. 2:13). God speaks directly to
NO ONE today. He speaks ONLY through his WRITTEN WORD and we are warned not to
depart from it (II John 9), or listen to any other (Gal. 1:8-9).
