Where In The Bible Will I Find:
Christians Falling From
Grace?
The apostle Paul clearly writes not only that it was
possible to fall from grace but that some had fallen from grace, “Ye are
severed from Christ, ye who would be justified by the law; ye are fallen away
from grace” (Gal. 5:4). This passage deals with those Christians who revert
back to the old law, which was done away at the cross of Christ (Col. 2:14),
and it plainly states that they had “fallen from grace.” God loves us
and if we love Him and obey His will He will keep us from falling.
“If we say that we have fellowship with him, and
walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as
he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus
Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (I John 1: 6-7). As long as we are “walking
in the light” we have fellowship with God, because we are “in Christ,” but
this promise is not unconditional, there are conditions that we must meet, we
must “walk in the light, as he is in the light.”
God will, by the blood of Jesus, constantly cleanse
us from sin - but only if we continue to do His will. If we go back into
darkness (sin), we are no longer in fellowship with God (I John 1:6) and that
means we are under condemnation, for the blood of Jesus no longer cleanses us,
v. 7. Instead of teaching that we cannot fall from grace, and can be out of
fellowship with God, this passage plainly shows the possibility of
Christians going back into darkness where they are no longer in fellowship with
God.
The Lord's promise to keep us safe is conditional,
and if we do not keep the conditions, we lose the promise. Scriptures plainly
show that Christians can, and have fallen from grace, “...are
fallen from grace ... as touching those who were once enlightened ... and then
fell away…” (Gal. 5:4; Heb. 6:4-6). “Wherefore let him that
thinketh he standeth take heed test he fall” (I Cor. 10:12). “...After
they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the
Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome,
the last state is become worse with them than the first” (II Peter 2:20).
“Let us therefore give
diligence to enter into that rest, that no man fall after the same example of
disobedience”
(Heb. 4:11). These, and dozens of other verses, teach us that a child of God
CAN FALL from grace and be eternally lost. We have this promise from Jesus, “…Be
thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life” (Rev. 2:10), but what will happen to us if we are NOT faithful unto death? Paul knew
that it was possible that he, even himself, could be rejected. “But I buffet
my body, and bring it into bondage: lest by any means, after that I have
preached to others, I myself should be rejected” (I Cor. 9:27). Other
warnings are given by Peter in II Peter 3: 17, and John in I John 5:16.
Believe, and OBEY God is the only safe way to keep from falling.
