Just Who Should We Choose To Follow?

Where In The Bible Will I Find:

Just Who Should We Choose To Follow?

We are living in a time when most of society are saying "yes" to things that they should say "no" to, and "no" to the things they should say "yes" to. It is little wonder that our young people seem confused. Let's face it, adults are confused. And since adults are confused, should it not follow that the youth who follows them are going to be just as bewildered?

It should go without saying that every individual is going to follow someone or something. The one a persons chooses to follow will, in all likelihood, determine the kind of mortal he/she will become. All to often we put human beings on a pedestal, only to be fooled by some misdeed that they have done or alleged to have done.

Therefore we should choose careful those we seek to follow. How do we do this? What does the Bible say? When Christ saw Peter and Andrew, He told them to "follow me and I will make you fishers of men" (Matt. 4:19; Mark 1:17). What Christ was asking these two brothers to do may have seemed strange to Peter and Andrew. These two individuals probably had been fishermen most of their life. The Bible says that they were "casting their nets" when the Lord saw them and from all indications fishing is where they made their livelihood.

And yet, the Bible says: "And straightway they forsook their nets and followed him" (Mark 1:18). When we look at these Scriptures, we may be thinking that Peter and Andrew did not have much, to give up…a net and maybe a boat. In that day and time that may have been considered a lot…But they gave it all up to follow Christ! How much would we give up to follow Christ, the Savior of the world?

Many individuals would say that they are following Christ, when in truth they fail to follow the examples as set forth in the sacred Scriptures. Is it enough to just say "I love Christ," and do nothing more to back it up? I think not. The apostle Paul told the Corinthians:  "Where I beseech you, be ye followers (imitators) of me" (I Cor. 4:16). Do you suppose Paul thought he had something special that no one else bad? No!! I don't think so, because in I Corinthians 11:1, Paul makes it quite clear that he meant something entirely different as he says: "Be ye followers of me, EVEN AS I AM OF CHRIST."

He also told the Ephesians saints; "Be ye followers of God as dear children" (Eph. 5:1). Within these few Scriptures we are told to follow Christ. We may seek to follow men that to us appear to have become great. But when all is said and done they are nothing and probably won't get us anywhere. In Matthew 28:18-20 we read: "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, 'All power (authority) is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.'"

So many seek to follow the commandments of men without trying to find out if what these men teach are based on the teaching of Christ and His apostles.
