Where In The Bible Will I Find:
The Divorced Guilty Party Permitted
To Remarry?
The
teaching of Jesus in very plain and final on this subject. "Whosoever
shall put away his wife, except for fornication, and shall marry another,
committeth adultery; and he that marrieth her when she is put away committeth
adultery" (Matt. 19:9). Whosoever (any person at all - Webster), shall
put away his wife, or husband (divorce her, or him), except it be for
fornication (engage in sex with another person outside the marriage
relationship), and marry another (enter into a marital relationship with
another person), committeth - literally keeps on committing adultery.
Adultery (a
sin often mentioned in the Scriptures and, unrepented of leads to eternal
condemnation). The passage involves two people -man and a woman - in a union
described as marriage, an honorable union and one that was ordained by Jehovah
(Gen. 2:24). It is a permanent arrangement, intended to last throughout life, and
may be broken only by two things: (1) "death" (Rom. 7:1, 2); or (2)
"fornication" (unfaithfulness to the marriage bond, Matt. 19:9).
Human
legislative bodies have legalized divorce and remarriage permitting it on
numerous grounds; but, it should be kept in mind that man cannot legislate for
God; that God is not bound by the acts of men, and that His will in this, as in
all other matters by which we shall be judged at the last great day is set out
in the New Testament. At the judgment, the books will be opened, and the
destinies of all will be determined by compliance, or, as the case may be,
non-compliance with its teaching (Rev. 20:12).
He who
would add to this, or take from it, does so at the expense of his soul's
eternal welfare (Deut. 4:2; Prov. 30:6; Rev. 22:18, 19). Taught clearly,
plainly and unmistakable is that should one of the parties of the marriage
relationship be guilty of sexual acts with anyone other than the marriage
partner (the only spiritual ground for divorce), the INNOCENT PARTY, (but NOT
the GUILTY PARTY) is free to remarry.
Also,
anyone that marries the guilty party commits adultery. There are no other
conditions while both live. Those contemplating separation and remarriage on
other grounds, or no grounds at all, should be fully aware that their highest
and most precious interests, both in time and in eternity are involved.
