Where In The Bible Will I
Find:
Following The Majority?
The
swelling crowds, the lure of popular acclaim, and the thrill of social
acceptance have all combined to give credence to the claim: "The majority
is doing it, therefore it must be right." But this is deceitfully in
error.
In
religious matters, the majority is seldom right. How many times have God's
people stood as a majority? Jesus said, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for
wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many
there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the
way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matt.
7:13-14). Multitudes comprise the throng that moves through the wide gate
on the broad way: but they are marching to destruction. But a strait gate and
narrow road is for the chosen few who march under the Lord's orders.
The
Lord recognized, "...many be called, but few chosen" (Matt.
20:16). He warned, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall
enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which
is in heaven" (Matt. 7:21). Many will expect to be saved because they
are of the majority, but Jesus will say, "...I never knew you: depart
from me..." (Matt. 7:23) Jesus repeated His warning, "Strive
to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter
in, and shall not be able" (Luke 13:24). The choice is yours: you can
follow the crowds, join the throng, go with the flow, and ride with the tide,
but remember, that way leads to destruction. Or you can choose to follow Jesus
Christ, the Saviour.
Denominational
error has always been in the majority. The church of Christ in the first
century grew faster than any organization then known, or has been known since, but
still, it was in the minority, and it has remained in the minority. Multitudes,
with zeal of God, have sought for righteousness, "...but not according
to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going, about
to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the
righteousness of God" (Rom. 10:1-3). "There is a way
which seemed right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death"
(Prov. 14:12).
All
must confess, "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself; it
is not in man that walketh to direct his steps" (Jer. 10:23). We must
hear and follow Jesus (Matt. 17:5; Acts 7:37). Jesus said, “…I am the way,
the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me"
(John 14:6). His followers are not in the majority, but they are in the right.
