Where
In The Bible Will I Find:
Contrast
Of The Old Law And The Gospel?
God,
through Moses, gave the Old Testament Law, including the ten commandments, to
the children of Israel, which is made clear by Moses himself in Deuteronomy
4:44-45, "And this is the law which Moses set before the children of
Israel: These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which
Moses spake unto the children of Israel, after they came forth out of
Egypt."
This
law was given to the children of Israel only, and it was never intended for
any other nation. This was stated by Moses, "The LORD ourGod made a
covenant with us in Horeb. The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers,
but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day" (Deut.
5:2-3). This law did not govern anyone before it was given to the children of
Israel on Mount Sinai and it was for them only. God gave them this law because
they had been delivered from bondage out of Egypt. It contained memorials and
observances concerning their deliverances which would have been meaningless to
Gentiles. In fact, this law was the “…middle wall of partitition"
that had to be broken down - taken out of the way - in order for the Gentiles
to come in.
The
apostle Paul states the duration of the Old Law, "Wherefore then
serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should
come to whom the promise was made..." (Gal. 3:19). Therefore, the Old
Law was to govern the children of Israel "till the seed should
come." That "Seed" was Christ. When Christ came and
instituted the New Law - the New Covenant - the New Testament, then the Old
Law as abolished - taken out of the way - nailed to the cross (Col. 2:14).
The
Old Law, including the ten commandments - was made void - nullified - in order
to make way for the New Law (Heb. 10:9). Contrasting the Old Law which was
only given to the Israelites, the
Gospel of Christ was, and is, given to the entire world, "...Go ye
into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth
and is baptized shall be saved” (Mark
16:15-16). Paul declared that he was "...not ashamed of the gospel of
Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth,
to the Jew first, and also to the Greek" (Rom. 1:16).
Peter
was made to realize that "…God is no respecter of persons: But in
every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with
him" (Acts 10:34-35). Christ made it possible for all nations to
become children of God when He broke “…down the middle wall of
partition between us, Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law
of commandments contained in ordinances…” (Eph. 2:1415). He invites
all people in all nations to, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and
are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matt. 11:28). Everyone
believing and obeying God's Word becomes members of His family, His church,
His kingdom (Acts 2:47).
